Uri Ben-Ari is an independent architect and researcher living in Eindhoven since 2007. His work currently tackles urban research methods, from mapping and evaluating patterns of growth, through analyzing existing planning policies, and offering site-specific, pragmatic courses of action. He considers himself a mediator, linking visions with real-time requirements and behavior. Ben-Ari is the initiator and co-curator of Instatements, a physical and virtual platform that seeks to redefine adaptive reuse and redevelopment, based on ex-industrial buildings, their historic versus contemporary prototypes and their significance with regard to the city centre.
architecture, so they tell us, is actually more about asking questions than providing answers. Here's ten of them:
Where does the built environment overlap with the un-built, the public spaces, the leftovers, the in-between? Can the architectural discourse be influenced by non-architects, and if so, how? What are the key factors in erecting a new building - or reusing an existing one? In what way does architecture portray the identity of place? Who are the forces behind today's monumental architecture? What is the extent of architectural research in any design process? What are the up-and-coming tools of the trade, what do they express and which of them has effectively upgraded conventional, 'old-school' methods? How is 'green' influencing today's buildings and cities? To what limits, or on what scale should sustainable, eco-friendly elements be implemented as architectural requirements? Will the sustainable issue stay on as a permanent factor in the future?

head turner #5 - het Marnix
"Transparency – insight, prospect and overview" - were the central themes for the design by Mecanoo of this sports centre in Amsterdam . The architects chose a simple outer form - two solid cubic masses with a glazed central atrium - to encase an unexpected interplay of floor levels, viewpoints, stairways and halls on the inside. Though each of the functions are framed by their own structures, thanks to the atrium with its abundance of light and almost shop-like windows, anyone entering the atrium is at once aware an intimate connection to the whole, but without being hammered by the acoustical dischord prevalent in so many gym halls. Swimmers from within aren't shut off in an aquarium, but are almost enjoying an open urban activity. Up on first floor level, the corridor to the sports hall, normally a neglected part of your average complex, is graced by light veneer cladding and a wonderful view of the Marnixstraat below.
To replace an old building, het Marnix clings on to some functional and structural features from the past - such as glass facades and an overhang onto the adjacent canal. The idea of laying the competition pool a little under canal water level is ingenious - albeit enjoyable only to those who are actually using the pool.
Off the record, an employee pointed out several daily discomforts, such as greenhouse-effect heat and want of adequate ventilation in the central hall. A reminder that climate control is always out there.
